This course is part of the study program in Transport Engineering, covering Green, Intelligent, and Integrated Transport and Logistics, and aims to familiarize students with the fundamentals of data center architecture within the aviation sector. The course focuses on the services and capabilities enabled by IT infrastructure solutions within an organizational context. It equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to communicate effectively with professionals specializing in hardware and software systems, as well as to design organizational processes and software solutions that require a deep understanding of the capabilities and limitations of IT infrastructure. Furthermore, it prepares students for organizational roles that involve interacting with external providers of IT infrastructure components and solutions. The course examines the data center as a holistic system, encompassing power supply, cooling, and networking, as well as distributed storage, data pipelines, and the workloads running upon it, with a specific emphasis on mission-critical aviation systems, where availability, latency, and traceability are essential operational requirements. Since these systems continuously generate large volumes of data (such as flight telemetry, operational logs, and sensor data), the course explores the infrastructure responsible for ingesting, storing, and processing this information. Students learn to size a data center based on specific requirements for capacity, data retention, and processing time; to select an appropriate level of redundancy; to estimate energy consumption and compare on-premise versus cloud costs; and to determine where to run an AI inference workload, justifying every decision with quantitative data.
